Napier: In a thrilling start to the three-match ODI series, New Zealand has set a formidable target of 345 runs for Pakistan to chase in the first encounter held in Napier.

New Zealand’s Commanding Batting Performance

Batting first after being invited by Pakistan’s captain Mohammad Rizwan, the hosts posted an impressive total of 344/9 in their allotted 50 overs. The standout performer of the innings was Mark Chapman, who delivered a sensational knock of 132 runs, smashing 13 fours and six towering sixes. Daryl Mitchell also played a crucial role, contributing a solid 76 runs, forming a crucial 199-run partnership with Chapman after an early top-order collapse.

Debutant Mohammad Abbas added fireworks towards the end, scoring a rapid 52 off just 26 balls, including three sixes and three fours, helping New Zealand reach a challenging total.

Pakistan’s Bowling Efforts

Pakistan’s bowlers had a mixed outing, managing to pick up wickets but conceding runs at a high rate. Young pacer Irfan Khan impressed with three wickets, while Haris Rauf and Akif Javed bagged two wickets each. Naseem Shah and Mohammad Ali chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Early Setback for New Zealand

New Zealand got off to a shaky start, losing three wickets for just 50 runs. Will Young (15), Nick Kelly (15), and Henry Nicholls (11) failed to capitalize on their starts. However, a stunning recovery by Chapman and Mitchell turned the tide in New Zealand’s favor.

Pakistan’s Playing XI for the First ODI

Pakistan has fielded a competitive lineup featuring:

  • Abdullah Shafiq
  • Usman Khan
  • Babar Azam
  • Mohammad Rizwan (captain)
  • Salman Ali Agha
  • Tayyab Tahir
  • Mohammad Irfan Khan
  • Naseem Shah
  • Haris Rauf
  • Akif Javed
  • Mohammad Ali

Notably, Akif Javed, Mohammad Ali, and Usman Khan are making their ODI debuts for Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Chase – A Tough Challenge Ahead

With a massive target of 345 runs, Pakistan will need a strong batting display from their top-order to make an impact in this high-stakes match. Given New Zealand’s past dominance, including their recent 4-1 win in the T20I series against Pakistan, the visitors will have to bring their A-game to level the playing field.
