LAHORE: Salman Ali Agha is being seriously considered for Pakistan’s Test captaincy as the future of current skipper Shan Masood remains uncertain, sources revealed on Friday.
The development comes after Pakistan’s recent poor displays in the Test format, including consecutive whitewashes in series against Bangladesh, which has increased the pressure on Masood’s captaincy.
Sources reported that during the Bangladesh tour, communication between Masood and a few players had significantly decreased. Sources said the Pakistan captain was mostly with his family members during the team’s journey back home and had little interaction with his teammates.
Amid Pakistan’s ongoing struggles in Test cricket, sources have indicated that the cricket board is looking at potential leadership changes.
Salman Ali Agha has emerged as a strong contender to replace Babar Azam if he resigns or is deposed as captain.
Agha is currently the skipper of Pakistan’s T20I side and has been named vice-captain of the ODI team for the upcoming home series against Australia.
Meanwhile, Shan Masood, Pakistan’s Test captain in 2023, has captained the side in 16 games so far. Under his leadership, Pakistan has won four and lost 12.
Pakistan have no Test matches scheduled until July, when they travel to the West Indies for a two-match series.
