DUBAI: Pakistan have been fined and docked World Test Championship points after being found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during the third Test against England in Birmingham.
The Pakistan team was 11 overs short of the required rate after time allowances were taken into account. England won the Test by eight wickets, completing a 3-0 series victory over Pakistan.
As a result of the over-rate offence, Pakistan’s players have been fined 50 per cent of their match fees. The team has also lost 11 points from its ICC World Test Championship tally.
ICC Confirms Pakistan’s Sanction
Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees announced the decision following charges brought by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Palekar and fourth umpire Russell Warren.
Under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are fined five per cent of their match fee for each over their team falls short of the required rate. The maximum fine is limited to 50 per cent of the match fee.
Pakistan’s 11-over shortfall therefore resulted in the maximum individual fine being applied to the players.
11 WTC Points Deducted
Pakistan have also suffered a significant setback in the World Test Championship standings.
Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions requires teams to lose one championship point for every over they fail to complete within the allotted time.
With Pakistan falling 11 overs behind the required rate in the Edgbaston Test, all 11 corresponding WTC points have been deducted.
The penalty leaves Pakistan ninth in the WTC standings with a points percentage of 4.63. The deduction comes shortly after England completed a 3-0 series sweep, adding further disappointment to Pakistan’s campaign.
Sri Lanka Series Next
Pakistan’s next WTC assignment will come in November when they host Sri Lanka for a two-Test series.
The two matches are scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi and Lahore as Pakistan begin their next phase of the championship campaign.
