Pakistan are preparing for a significant reshuffle behind the scenes as they gear up for their forthcoming Test assignment in Bangladesh, with several former internationals poised to step into key coaching roles.
According to sources close to the developments, ex-fast bowler Umar Gul is set to be entrusted with the bowling unit for the two-match series, while former middle-order batter Asad Shafiq is expected to oversee the batting department. Meanwhile, Abdul Saad is likely to take charge of fielding duties, having previously worked with the national women’s side.
In a notable development, discussions are also underway regarding a prominent leadership role for former skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed. He is being strongly considered for the position of head coach for the Bangladesh tour, signaling a potential shift towards involving recently retired players in strategic roles.
The red-ball series, scheduled between May 8 and May 20, will mark Pakistan’s return to Test cricket after a lengthy gap. Their previous outing in the format came against South Africa on home soil late last year.
Preparations are already in motion at the National Cricket Academy, where an 18-member training camp is currently underway. The camp, running until April 20, is serving as a crucial evaluation phase, with selectors closely monitoring performances before finalizing the touring squad.
The team is expected to depart for Bangladesh on May 3, though deliberations over the final composition of both the squad and support staff are still ongoing.
This preparatory camp features a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising domestic talent, reflecting Pakistan’s intent to build depth as they approach the next cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.
