KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has indicated he will once again approach Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in an effort to secure permission for spectators to attend matches during the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 11.
Speaking to reporters in Karachi, Naqvi emphasized that restoring crowd presence remains a priority for the board. He noted that discussions with the prime minister would be revisited, as the PCB continues exploring every possible avenue to reopen stadiums to fans.
At the same time, Naqvi acknowledged the broader international situation, particularly tensions linked to the Middle East, which have influenced government decisions. He underlined that any move to allow spectators must align with national policies shaped by these global developments.
Earlier, authorities had decided to stage PSL matches behind closed doors as part of cost-cutting measures introduced in response to the ongoing fuel crisis and regional uncertainties. In addition, the tournament schedule was streamlined, restricting matches to venues in Karachi and Lahore to minimize travel and operational expenses.
The absence of spectators has sparked concern among franchise owners, many of whom have urged officials to reconsider. They argue that fan engagement is central to the league’s identity and significantly enhances the match-day atmosphere. Appeals have been made to both federal and provincial leadership to permit limited or full crowd attendance.
Despite these challenges, Naqvi praised security and law enforcement agencies for maintaining a safe and uninterrupted tournament. He confirmed that, while efforts are underway to bring fans back, the match schedule will remain unchanged.
Addressing financial aspects, Naqvi assured franchises that gate revenue would still be allocated to them, with the PCB absorbing associated operational costs.
Looking ahead, he also revealed that discussions are ongoing regarding potential upgrades to the National Bank Cricket Arena, with the possibility of a major redevelopment aimed at enhancing facilities for players and spectators alike.
