Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi has firmly denied speculation linking him to the top job at the International Cricket Council (ICC), putting an end to growing chatter about a possible leadership shift in global cricket.
Speaking to reporters at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium following a Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 11 fixture between Peshawar Zalmi and Multan Sultans, Naqvi dismissed the reports as unfounded. The rumours, which gained traction on social media in recent days, suggested that he could replace current ICC chairman Jay Shah while simultaneously continuing in his existing roles, including his position with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
Naqvi made it clear he has no intention of taking on additional responsibilities, indicating that his current commitments already demand his full attention.
During the same media interaction, the PCB chairman also addressed the ongoing restriction on spectator attendance in PSL matches. He revealed plans to once again approach Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to seek permission for fans to return to stadiums, emphasizing the board’s desire to restore the vibrant matchday atmosphere.
However, Naqvi acknowledged that the situation is complex, pointing to broader geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, as a key factor influencing government decisions. The no-crowd policy was introduced earlier as part of austerity measures aimed at managing the impact of the global fuel crisis and limiting large-scale public movement.
As part of these measures, PSL matches have been confined to Karachi and Lahore, reducing logistical demands and operational costs. Despite this, franchise owners have voiced concerns over the absence of spectators, stressing that fan engagement is central to the league’s identity and commercial success.
Several team representatives have urged authorities to reconsider the restrictions, appealing directly to federal and provincial leadership to allow crowds back into venues.
While Naqvi signaled his willingness to push for a revision of the spectator policy, he ruled out any alterations to the tournament schedule, confirming that fixtures will proceed as planned.
