Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has weighed in on Mohamed Salah’s recent emotional statements, urging the club and the Egyptian forward to reconcile for the sake of Liverpool’s performance. Salah, visibly frustrated after being left out of the squad for the 1-0 Champions League win over Inter Milan, criticized manager Arne Slot and the club hierarchy for “throwing him under the bus” following the 3-3 draw at Leeds.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher labeled Salah’s comments as “disgraceful,” but Gerrard advised both sides to move past the tension and focus on the bigger picture.
“He’s obviously really upset about not playing, which I respect,” Gerrard told TNT Sports. “A couple of lines about throwing people under the bus were wrong. He needs to step back and address this with the manager.”
Gerrard emphasized that conflicts between players and management are not uncommon. “I’ve witnessed it firsthand with Luis Suarez when he had disagreements with Brendan Rodgers. I’ve had my own moments too. As players, we’ve all said things in the heat of emotion,” Gerrard added. He also reflected on his own past missteps, including an incident against Manchester United that led to a sending off.
The Liverpool legend expressed hope that Salah would recognize his comments were made in the heat of the moment. “He’s been a bit emotional and hasty, but he knows what’s at stake for the team,” Gerrard noted.

Salah’s explosive remarks have fueled speculation about a potential departure from Anfield, despite signing a lucrative contract extension earlier this year. The 33-year-old has also attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, with the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund reportedly ready to make a move for him.
“Liverpool need Mo Salah back playing at his best,” Gerrard said. “He’s their top scorer, and his contribution is vital if they want to overcome their current struggles. If this situation continues, it could have serious consequences.”
Salah is expected to join the Africa Cup of Nations after Liverpool’s home Premier League match against Brighton. Speaking after being an unused substitute at Leeds, Salah admitted confusion about his standing at the club. “I had a good relationship with the manager, and suddenly it seems we don’t have any relationship. It feels like someone doesn’t want me at the club,” he said.
This season has been challenging for both Salah and Liverpool. The Egyptian star, who played a key role in Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League triumphs, has scored only four goals in 13 league appearances. Meanwhile, Liverpool currently sits 10th in the Premier League table, highlighting the urgency of resolving internal tensions for the remainder of the campaign.
