Uncertainty continues to surround Novak Djokovic as he works to overcome a lingering shoulder problem in the lead-up to the European clay swing, casting doubt on his potential appearance at the Madrid Open.
The 24-time Grand Slam winner has been largely inactive in recent weeks, with the injury forcing him out of the Miami Open and prompting him to bypass the Monte Carlo Masters—two key stops in the buildup to Roland Garros.
Djokovic’s most recent outing came at the Indian Wells Masters, where he exited in the fourth round after a loss to Jack Draper. Earlier in the year, he also fell short in the final of the Australian Open against Carlos Alcaraz.
Now in Spain to begin on-court preparations, Djokovic acknowledged that his physical condition remains a work in progress. While speaking during an appearance at a EuroLeague game in Madrid, he indicated that his participation is still uncertain as he focuses on recovery.
He explained that he is doing everything possible to regain full fitness but stopped short of confirming his readiness for competition, emphasizing that the priority is to manage the injury and extend his playing longevity.
The tournament draw for Madrid is set to be revealed on Monday, with matches scheduled between April 22 and May 3. However, Djokovic’s larger target is firmly set on the French Open, beginning May 24, where he will attempt to capture an unprecedented 25th major title.
