COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially brought back legendary fast bowler Lasith Malinga as the fast-bowling consultant for the national men’s team, reinforcing its preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday and will see Malinga serve in a short-term role from December 15 to January 25. This strategic move is part of Sri Lanka’s broader build-up to the global tournament, which the country will co-host alongside India from February 7 to March 8, 2026.

During his month-long assignment, Malinga will work closely with Sri Lanka’s fast bowlers, focusing on skill enhancement, tactical awareness, and match-readiness. Particular attention will be given to death bowling, an area where Sri Lanka has sought greater consistency and where Malinga’s expertise is widely regarded as unmatched in world cricket.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Lasith Malinga as the Consultant – Fast Bowling Coach for the national men’s team,” the board said in an official statement.
“Malinga will support the preparation and development of Sri Lanka’s national fast bowlers as part of the build-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.”

The cricket board added that it aims to capitalize on Malinga’s vast international exposure and deep understanding of T20 cricket, especially his ability to guide bowlers in high-pressure situations.

Although the engagement is officially limited to around 40 days, Malinga’s return is not new to the national setup. Over the past few years, he has regularly assisted Sri Lanka Cricket as a consultant, offering technical input and mentoring young pacers. He has also remained closely involved with the coaching staff led by Sanath Jayasuriya, providing insights on modern fast-bowling demands.

Lasith Malinga is widely celebrated as one of Sri Lanka’s greatest fast bowlers. Across formats, he claimed 546 international wickets during a distinguished career spanning nearly 16 years. His unique slingy action, pinpoint yorkers, and composure under pressure made him one of the most feared bowlers in white-ball cricket.

Beyond individual achievements, Malinga’s leadership remains a defining part of his legacy. He captained Sri Lanka to their maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumph in 2014, a milestone moment that elevated him to iconic status in Sri Lankan cricket history.

Sri Lanka will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Ireland on February 8, followed by group-stage matches against Oman on February 12 and Australia on February 16. With Malinga’s guidance returning at a crucial time, Sri Lanka Cricket hopes to sharpen its pace attack and make a strong impact on home soil.
