RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazil’s star forward Neymar Jr. got the loudest cheer of the night when Carlo Ancelotti confirmed his inclusion in the squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026 during a gala ceremony here on Monday.
The veteran forward made a dramatic return to the national side after almost three years out, with his inclusion being the biggest talking point from the announcement of Brazil’s 26-man squad.
Ancelotti announced Neymar’s name soon after confirming the selection of Matheus Cunha, sparking a giant reaction inside the venue.
As soon as the Italian coach said “Neymar Jr.,” the crowd erupted into loud applause and chants, and Ancelotti had to pause for a moment to let it sink in.
The roar of the crowd became an anthem-like chant of Neymar’s name as the audience celebrated the return of Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer.
The 34-year-old attacker had not represented his country since suffering a knee injury in a 2023 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay, despite scoring 79 times in 128 appearances for Brazil.
Neymar had been away from the national setup due to a mixture of injuries and inconsistent fitness. Ancelotti had left him out of Brazil’s friendlies against France and Croatia in March due to fitness concerns.
The former FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star will now play in his fourth World Cup after playing for Brazil in the 2014, 2018, and 2022 editions.
Brazil, who are seeking a record sixth World Cup title, open their World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13 before meeting Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
Neymar joins a potent attacking lineup that includes Barcelona striker Raphinha and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior.
