The International Cricket Council (ICC) has honored India’s Test skipper Shubman Gill as the Men’s Player of the Month for July 2025, recognizing his phenomenal batting displays in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.
The 25-year-old outperformed England captain Ben Stokes and South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder to claim the award, thanks to a spectacular run of form with the bat. In three July Tests, Gill amassed 567 runs at a staggering average of 94.50, which included a double century and two centuries across just six innings.
“Being named ICC Player of the Month for July is special, especially as it comes during my first Test series as captain,” Gill expressed. “The double hundred in Birmingham will remain one of my career highlights.”
Record-Breaking Performance at Edgbaston
Gill’s defining moment came during India’s historic win at Edgbaston, where he scored 269 runs in the first innings and 161 runs in the second, steering India to a massive 336-run victory. His match tally of 430 runs is now the second-highest in Test history, trailing only Graham Gooch’s 456.
In the process, Gill:
- Became the first Indian captain to score a Test double century in England.
- Broke Sunil Gavaskar’s 221-run record for the highest Test score by an Indian in England.
- Surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s 21-year-old mark for the highest overseas score by an Indian outside Asia.
Consistency Across the Series
While he struggled briefly with scores of 16 and 6 at Lord’s, Gill bounced back with a match-saving 103 at Old Trafford to help India draw the Test after a top-order collapse at 0/2.
By the end of the five-match series, Gill had scored 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, securing both the Player of the Series title and the second-highest run tally in a single ICC World Test Championship series.
Making History in ICC Awards
With this recognition, Shubman Gill becomes the first male cricketer to win the ICC Player of the Month award four times—a record matched only by Australia’s Ash Gardner and West Indies captain Hayley Matthews in women’s cricket.
“This award is not just mine; it’s for my teammates and the support staff who stood by me. I’m looking forward to continuing this form and bringing more success to the country,” Gill concluded.
