LAHORE: Pakistan’s premier fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has commenced his rehabilitation programme at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) following a knee injury sustained during the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) 15 in Australia, according to media reports.

The left-arm pacer suffered the injury while representing Brisbane Heat in their match against Adelaide Strikers on December 27. Shaheen appeared in visible discomfort during the 14th over of the contest, eventually limping off the field while gesturing towards his right knee. Medical staff later ruled him out of the remainder of the tournament, bringing his BBL campaign to an early end.

Following the setback, Shaheen was recalled to Pakistan by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to undergo further assessment and rehabilitation. The fast bowler took to social media to thank Brisbane Heat management and fans for their support, expressing optimism about returning to competitive cricket soon.

“Grateful to the Brisbane Heat family and fans for the incredible love,” Shaheen wrote. “Due to an unexpected injury, I’ve been called back for rehabilitation. Hoping to be back on the field very soon.”

Focus on Recovery and Fitness

Sources suggest that Shaheen’s rehab plan at the NCA will involve structured fitness drills, physiotherapy sessions, and periodic medical evaluations to closely monitor his recovery. The PCB is expected to take a cautious approach, keeping the T20 World Cup 2026 in mind, which is scheduled to begin on February 7.

While the full extent of the injury has not been officially disclosed, concerns remain over whether the pacer will be able to regain peak fitness in time for the global tournament. Shaheen is regarded as a key component of Pakistan’s bowling attack, particularly in high-pressure white-ball competitions.

It is worth noting that Shaheen Afridi, along with former captain Babar Azam, was not selected for Pakistan’s three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka due to their participation in BBL 15.

Zaman Khan Replaces Shaheen at Brisbane Heat

In Shaheen’s absence, Brisbane Heat have named Pakistan pacer Zaman Khan as his replacement. The decision was approved by the BBL Technical Committee, allowing Zaman to be available for Heat’s upcoming fixture against Sydney Thunder at the Gabba.

Interestingly, the match will see Zaman face his former side, having previously played for Sydney Thunder during BBL 13. Known for his slingy bowling action and sharp death-over skills, Zaman impressed in his earlier stint, picking up eight wickets in four matches at an average of 16.38.

Brisbane Heat head coach Johan Botha welcomed Zaman’s inclusion, highlighting his ability to strike early and adapt during crucial phases of the game.

“He’s a genuine wicket-taker and brings variety with his pace and angles,” Botha said. “Zaman adds depth to our attack at a vital stage of the tournament.”

As Shaheen continues his road to recovery in Lahore, Pakistan cricket fans will be hoping for positive updates, with the T20 World Cup drawing closer and expectations remaining high.
