Rachin Ravindra’s injury: New Zealand Cricket issues latest update
Team says Rachin had passed his initial Head Injury Assessment (HIA)
New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra is recovering well after sustaining a forehead injury during a warm-up match against Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy, the team management confirmed on Saturday.
Ravindra suffered a laceration on his forehead after misjudging a catch under the floodlights in the 38th over of Pakistan’s innings at Gaddafi Stadium. The ball struck him directly on the face, leaving him bloodied.
“He sustained a laceration to the forehead which has been addressed and treated at the ground,” New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said in a statement.
The team further confirmed that he had passed his initial Head Injury Assessment (HIA) and would remain under observation.
Teammate Glenn Phillips, speaking to reporters after the match, described the moment as “terrifying” but was relieved that Ravindra had remained conscious throughout.
“He lost the ball in the lights, and unfortunately, the ball won that situation this time. He’s being monitored, and I’m sure he’ll be raring to go as soon as possible,” Phillips said.
Phillips played a starring role in New Zealand’s 78-run victory, smashing his maiden ODI century. His unbeaten 106 off 74 deliveries powered the Black Caps to 330 for six in their 50 overs. Pakistan, in response, were bowled out for 252.
Reflecting on his performance, Phillips, who was named Player of the Match, said, “ODI cricket has been my favourite format growing up, and getting that century was a surreal moment. Batting at number six, opportunities to reach three figures don’t come often, so I’m grateful everything lined up today.”
New Zealand are set to face South Africa on Monday at Gaddafi Stadium as part of the tri-series warm-up for the Champions Trophy. Their campaign officially begins on February 19 when they take on tournament hosts Pakistan in Karachi.
