Sri Lanka have been dealt a major setback in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign after star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a serious injury.
The 28-year-old leg-spinner suffered a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka’s opening group-stage match against Ireland, played in Colombo on Sunday. Hasaranga sustained the injury in the eighth over of Ireland’s innings when he pulled up mid-over after delivering two balls. Despite visible discomfort, the Sri Lankan skipper showed immense determination and completed his bowling spell.
Hasaranga’s fighting spirit paid off as he played a decisive role in Sri Lanka’s 20-run victory. Bowling his full quota of four overs, he claimed three crucial wickets while conceding just 25 runs, helping the hosts gain early momentum in the competition.
However, post-match medical assessments raised concerns over the severity of the injury. An MRI scan later confirmed a significant tear in his left hamstring, effectively ruling him out of the remainder of the T20 World Cup. The news has come as a heavy blow to Sri Lanka, given Hasaranga’s importance as both a wicket-taking bowler and a capable lower-order batter.
Sri Lanka Cricket is yet to officially announce his replacement, but reports suggest that all-rounder Dushan Hemantha is the leading candidate to step into the squad. Hemantha has been part of Sri Lanka’s recent T20 setup and could provide balance to the side, although replacing Hasaranga’s experience and match-winning ability will be a tough task.
The Islanders now face a challenging road ahead in the group stage. Sri Lanka are scheduled to play Oman on February 12 in Pallekele, followed by a high-profile clash against Australia at the same venue on February 16. Their final group match will be against Zimbabwe on February 19 at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium.
With Hasaranga sidelined, Sri Lanka’s leadership group will need to regroup quickly and adjust their strategies. The team’s depth and resilience will be tested as they look to remain competitive in the tournament without one of their most influential players.
