Harry Brook breaks silence on two-year IPL ban

England’s newly appointed white-ball captain, Harry Brook, has responded to the swirling rumors surrounding a potential Indian Premier League (IPL) ban after he chose to opt out of the 2025 season.

Brook rose to the top of England’s leadership choices after Jos Buttler stepped down following the Champions Trophy 2025. Even before his captaincy was officially announced, Brook had declared his withdrawal from IPL 2025, citing the need to rest and recharge after what he called “the busiest period of my career so far.”

BCCI’s Alleged Ban

Following his decision, reports emerged that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might impose a two-year ban on him for skipping the IPL without valid reason, in line with their player commitment guidelines.

When asked about this alleged ban during his official unveiling at Headingley, Brook stated:

“They haven’t told me anything officially. But if I do get banned, fair play. Those are the rules, and I fully respect that. My focus right now is completely on England.”

“England Comes First,” Says Brook

The 26-year-old cricketer was candid about his priorities. He emphasized that he is willing to sacrifice financial opportunities in franchise cricket if it means he can focus solely on national duties.

“If it means losing some money here and there, that’s a price I’m more than willing to pay to represent England. I won’t be participating in franchise cricket for now—my heart is set on playing for my country.”

Brook made it clear that England is his main priority, and any franchise commitments can wait.

“Playing for England gives me more satisfaction than anything else. Franchise leagues are great, but for now, they can take a backseat.”

Upcoming Duties as Captain

Brook has already had a taste of leadership, having led England in an ODI series against Australia last year and serving as vice-captain during the Champions Trophy 2025. His first official assignment as permanent white-ball captain will be the upcoming T20I and ODI series against the West Indies at home, beginning in late May.

To date, Harry Brook has featured in 26 ODIs, scoring 816 runs, and has represented England in 44 T20 matches, including the victorious 2022 T20 World Cup campaign in Australia.
