Robin Smith, 62, former England batter, has died, Hampshire confirmed Tuesday. The South African-born cricketer passed away unexpectedly on Monday in Australia, where he had lived for years.
Smith’s family released a statement through Hampshire Cricket, mourning his sudden passing.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Robin Arnold Smith, beloved father to Harrison and Margaux, and brother to Christopher,” the family said. The cause of death is unknown and will be determined by postmortem results.
Days before his death, Smith, known as “The Judge,” met the England Lions squad in Perth ahead of the first Ashes Test, invited by coach Andrew Flintoff.
The family also emphasized Smith’s legacy as one of England’s most charismatic cricketers.

Despite public struggles with alcohol and mental health after retiring in 2004, the family urged against speculation on the cause of death.
