Dhaka: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced the short-term appointment of English coach Julian Wood as the team’s specialist batting coach ahead of the Asia Cup 2025. Wood, known for his expertise in modern power-hitting techniques, is currently the power-hitting coach for Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans.
Three-Month Tenure to Boost White-Ball Performance
BCB confirmed that Wood’s contract will span three months, with his first official assignment being the Asia Cup, scheduled to begin on September 9 in the UAE. His work will primarily focus on enhancing Bangladesh’s batting strength in white-ball formats.
Before this role, Wood served as a power-hitting specialist with Sri Lanka Cricket and worked with several international teams and T20 franchises worldwide. His proven ability to improve players’ hitting range and efficiency makes him a valuable addition to the Bangladesh coaching staff.
Preparations for Asia Cup and Beyond
BCB officials believe Wood’s input will be crucial during Bangladesh’s preparatory camp at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka, where he will work with the squad for three weeks before the tournament. His coaching is expected to prepare the team not only for the Asia Cup but also as part of the build-up to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Speaking about his role, Wood said,
“There’s a lot of talent in Bangladesh. In modern white-ball cricket, the ability to strike the ball with power is essential. My job is to show the players how to generate and use that power more efficiently.”
Previous Experience in Bangladesh Cricket
This is not Wood’s first involvement in Bangladesh cricket. He previously worked with Chattogram Challengers in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he gained familiarity with local players and conditions.
While his tenure beyond the Asia Cup has yet to be confirmed, both BCB and Wood remain optimistic about a possible extension depending on team requirements and performance outcomes.
With the Asia Cup 2025 approaching, Bangladesh will be hoping that Wood’s power-hitting expertise can give them the edge needed to challenge top cricketing nations.
