COLOMBO: Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha has extended his best wishes to India’s explosive opener Abhishek Sharma ahead of the much-anticipated India-Pakistan showdown in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference at Colombo’s iconic R. Premadasa Stadium, Agha made it clear that Pakistan want to face India at full strength, emphasizing the value of competing against the best players on the biggest stage.
“Abhishek is a top-quality cricketer. I hope he recovers in time and is available for the match because we want to challenge the strongest Indian side,” Agha said.
The Indian left-hander was ruled out of his team’s previous fixture after being hospitalized due to a stomach infection. Despite his absence, India secured a dominant 93-run win over Namibia, showcasing their depth and balance. However, Sharma’s aggressive approach at the top of the order adds a different dimension to India’s batting lineup.
Statistically, Sharma has posed problems for Pakistan in the past. In three encounters, he has amassed 110 runs at an impressive strike rate of 189.65, underlining his ability to shift momentum quickly in high-pressure games. His potential return could significantly influence the dynamics of Sunday’s blockbuster clash.
Addressing another topic that has generated debate in recent days, Agha dismissed concerns surrounding spinner Usman Tariq and his bowling action. The Pakistan skipper reiterated that the off-spinner has been cleared twice and remains unaffected by outside noise.
“There has been repeated talk about his action, but he has already been cleared. I don’t understand why it keeps coming up. It does not distract him at all,” Agha stated firmly.
The captain also stressed the importance of squad depth and adaptability in tournament cricket. With varying pitch conditions expected in Colombo, Agha confirmed that the final playing XI would be determined after a careful assessment of the surface.
“We are prepared to play quality cricket. Conditions and pitch behavior matter, and all 15 squad members are ready. Anyone can step in and perform,” he added.
Historically, Pakistan have faced challenges against India in ICC World Cup fixtures. Agha acknowledged that past results have not always favored his side but maintained that the current squad is focused on growth rather than history.
“Our World Cup record against India hasn’t been ideal, but we’ve learned from previous experiences. Our aim is to execute our plans well and deliver a strong performance,” he noted.
When questioned about India’s formidable batting lineup and the form of Babar Azam, Agha responded with calm confidence.
“Babar is in good touch, and that’s positive for us. We are concentrating on our own processes and staying composed,” he said with a smile.
As anticipation builds for one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries, both teams appear determined to let performance, not pressure, define the outcome in Colombo.
