(Web Desk) – In a significant development for Asian cricket, Mohsin Naqvi, the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), has been officially appointed as the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

The decision was finalized during a recent virtual meeting of the ACC’s executive committee, as confirmed by reliable sources. A formal announcement regarding the appointment is expected shortly.

Mohsin Naqvi will lead the ACC for a two-year term, succeeding Jay Shah of India. Jay Shah, who also serves as the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), had been at the helm of the ACC before Naqvi’s appointment. Shah’s tenure as ACC secretary was recently extended in January 2024, reflecting India’s continued influence within the regional cricketing body.

Naqvi’s Dual Role in Pakistani Politics and Cricket

Naqvi’s elevation to ACC president comes just months after his appointment as PCB Chairman in February 2024, a role he is set to hold for three years. Notably, he is also Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister, a dual responsibility that places him at the intersection of politics and sport.

To ensure smooth management of cricket affairs amid his political responsibilities, Naqvi has chosen to delegate cricketing duties to former Pakistan cricket captain Waqar Younis. Under this arrangement, Naqvi will concentrate on administrative affairs, while Younis will advise on cricket matters including team selections, domestic cricket policies, and international affairs, as well as the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to players.

Strategic Leadership for the Future of Asian Cricket

The rotating presidency of the ACC allows member nations to contribute to the leadership of Asian cricket. With Naqvi now at the helm, Pakistan is expected to play a more influential role in shaping the regional cricketing landscape, from grassroots development to international tournaments.

According to the PCB’s 2014 constitution, the chairman has the authority to assign certain responsibilities to other board officials. This flexibility has enabled Naqvi to partner with Waqar Younis to ensure effective governance without compromising on performance or progress.

As Mohsin Naqvi takes charge, stakeholders are optimistic about the strategic direction of the ACC under his leadership, with hopes of increased collaboration among Asian cricketing nations and stronger international representation.
