India’s preparations for their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 fixture against Namibia have suffered a setback after opener Abhishek Sharma was admitted to hospital with a stomach infection. The left-handed batter’s availability for Thursday’s match in New Delhi now remains uncertain.
According to reports from Indian media, Abhishek has been undergoing medical observation at a private hospital in the capital for the past two days. Doctors are conducting detailed examinations to determine the severity of the infection and assess his recovery timeline.
A source close to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the young opener is under medical supervision. While initial indications point to a stomach-related illness, the final diagnosis is awaited. His discharge from hospital has not yet been confirmed, casting doubt over his participation in the crucial group-stage encounter.
Fitness Concerns Began Against USA
Concerns regarding Abhishek’s health first surfaced during India’s tournament opener against the United States in Mumbai. The aggressive opener was dismissed for a first-ball duck and did not take the field during the USA’s run chase.
India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate later clarified that the batter had been dealing with stomach discomfort during the match. At the time, the team management expressed optimism that he would recover ahead of the Namibia fixture. However, his subsequent hospitalisation suggests the issue may be more serious than initially thought.
Possible Changes to India’s Batting Order
If Abhishek is ruled out, India may be forced to adjust their top-order combination. Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson is being considered as a potential replacement at the opening slot.
Samson, who recently lost his position as the first-choice wicketkeeper to Ishan Kishan following a modest series against New Zealand, could be drafted in to provide stability and experience at the top. Team management has indicated that multiple batting combinations are being evaluated depending on Abhishek’s fitness status.
India’s coaching staff is expected to take a final call closer to match day after receiving updated medical reports.
Boost on the Bowling Front
While Abhishek’s situation has created uncertainty, India have received positive news regarding their bowling attack. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the opening match due to illness, returned to full-intensity training in Delhi on Tuesday. His participation against Namibia now appears highly likely.
All-rounder Washington Sundar has also rejoined the squad after recovering from a side strain sustained during the New Zealand series. He bowled in the nets and participated actively in training drills, signaling that he is nearing full match fitness.
With the tournament progressing quickly, India will be eager to maintain momentum while managing player fitness carefully. The team’s final lineup for the Namibia clash will largely depend on Abhishek Sharma’s medical clearance in the coming hours.
