ISLAMABAD: The Government of Pakistan has officially confirmed that the Pakistan national cricket team will play against arch-rivals India on February 15 during the T20 World Cup 2026, putting an end to speculation surrounding the high-profile fixture.
The confirmation was made through an official statement shared on the Government of Pakistan’s verified social media channels, signaling a clear policy decision following extensive diplomatic and cricketing consultations.
According to the statement, the decision was reached after multilateral discussions involving the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the International Cricket Council (ICC), and several member boards. The government emphasized that the move aligns with Pakistan’s commitment to preserving the spirit of cricket and ensuring the smooth continuation of international tournaments.
“In light of outcomes achieved through multilateral engagements and upon the request of friendly nations, the Government of Pakistan has directed the Pakistan national cricket team to take the field on February 15, 2026, for its scheduled ICC Men’s T20 World Cup match,” the statement read.
The government further noted that the decision reflects Pakistan’s broader stance on supporting global sporting events and maintaining unity among participating cricketing nations, despite recent challenges in international cricket relations.
Sources confirmed that PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi formally briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the developments, including the conclusions of high-level meetings with ICC officials and representatives from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). These discussions reportedly focused on resolving concerns that had earlier cast uncertainty over Pakistan’s participation in certain fixtures.
An official briefing note stated that the prime minister was updated on the diplomatic efforts undertaken by the PCB to safeguard Pakistan’s interests while also upholding international cricketing obligations.
The government also acknowledged receiving formal requests from the Bangladesh Cricket Board, along with messages of support from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other ICC member nations. These communications urged Pakistan to play a leadership role in navigating recent complexities affecting the tournament.
“The Government of Pakistan reviewed the requests submitted by the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the supportive correspondence from Sri Lanka, the UAE, and other member countries, all of which sought Pakistan’s cooperation in arriving at a practical and inclusive solution,” the statement added.
The latest development follows earlier reports suggesting that Pakistan had considered not playing against India as a gesture of solidarity with Bangladesh amid ongoing concerns. However, officials now say the revised decision balances diplomatic sensitivities with the broader interests of international cricket.
The Pakistan vs India clash is widely regarded as one of the most anticipated matches of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, drawing massive global viewership. With the government’s confirmation, preparations for the marquee encounter are expected to proceed without further uncertainty.
